FangLiao Hotel is located less than 500 meters from Fangliao Train Station and just 200 meters from Fangliao Fishing Port. In the past, Fangliao Train Station was merely the name of a railway station. However, since the birth of 'FangLiao Hotel' in 2019, Fangliao has transformed into more than just the starting point for the Blue Innocent Joy Tourist Train. It has become a new popular attraction in Pingtung.

Stepping out of Fangliao Train Station, in less than three minutes, you'll come across this elegant and modern eight-story boutique hotel. At the entrance, two wooden sculptures crafted by Paiwan indigenous artisans stand, exuding a powerful and rustic beauty. Initially, it might seem somewhat surprising, but after a heartfelt explanation by Chen Bo-An, the young manager of FangLiao Hotel, it becomes quite moving. As it turns out, in the small town of Fangliao, with fewer than 1,200 residents, a blend of Hoklo, Hakka, and Paiwan indigenous people coexist. The indigenous woodcraft skills are innate and exceptional. The hotel collaborates with Paiwan indigenous artists, allowing them to unleash their creativity. The hotel purchases their artwork, using it for decoration and display, and interested travelers can also make a purchase.

Additionally, FangLiao Hotel has established the 'Fangke Market' at the train station. Apart from local fruits, dried fruits, the most popular items are the fresh catch of the day, such as groupers and 'wu zai yu'. These products are expertly packaged as perfect souvenirs, and hotel guests enjoy a 10% discount, making it convenient for travelers to take them home.

As a bridge platform connecting fishermen, farmers, and travelers, the 'Fangke Market' serves to promote agricultural products and cultural industries from Pingtung, including Fangliao, Jiadong, and Hengchun. The emergence of FangLiao Hotel itself is a touching legend. The owner, born in Jiadong, has a deep love for his hometown of Pingtung. Established in 1963, I-Fung Seaweed Pastehas just reached its 60th year in 2023, and the flavor of six decades has not faded away, all thanks to the owner's dedication to the 'freshness' of the green seaweed.

60th Anniversary Commemorative Gift Box 60th Anniversary Commemorative Gift Box

I-Fung Seaweed Sauce, formerly known as "I-Fung Food Factory", is a time-honored brand "I-Fung Xing" that has been operating in Hengchun for half a century. In the early days, it was engaged in the soy sauce and pickle business. Later, when the market was undergoing transformation, the second-generation shop owner Mr. Liao Renshan took advantage of the trend and combined Hengchun with Hengchun. The spring green seaweed was converted into seaweed sauce, because the key to good seaweed taste is good soy sauce. At that time, influenced by Japan's attention to detail and perfection, he re-developed the soy sauce business founded by his father and created the original "Ichiho" seaweed sauce, which is named after The Japanese concept of "malu ichi" means first-class, perfect, and top quality. The old shop that has been around for half a century is currently run by Mr. Liao Zhichang, who studied in Japan as the second generation (third generation shop owner). He upholds the family's delicious food and has taken over the production since he started it. It has been in business for 40 years.

The small storefront exudes a strong Japanese ambiance. The key to I-Fung Seaweed Paste's exceptional taste lies in their use of high-quality seaweed as the primary ingredient. They adhere to traditional, manual production methods, avoiding the addition of preservatives and artificial flavors. This approach ensures the seaweed retains its natural fibers and rich nutrients. As you approach the store, you can already smell the intense seaweed aroma, and when you open the seaweed sauce bottle, the entire essence of the sea engulfs your senses. When you taste it, you can even feel the delicate strands of seaweed, making every bite truly delightful.

The seaweed sauce comes in three flavors: original, shiitake mushroom, and honey. The seaweed sauce comes in three flavors: original, shiitake mushroom, and honey.

The seaweed sauce comes in three flavors: original, shiitake mushroom, and honey. It can be used for mixing with rice, porridge, noodles, dumplings, vegetables, and toast. The shop suggests it's great as a dipping sauce or for making soups. They also offer "seaweed" that needs to be stored in the freezer, which the shop recommends for making soups to enhance the flavor.

Precious Taiwanese seaweed of high quality. Precious Taiwanese seaweed of high quality.

Due to global warming, there have been changes in marine ecosystems, affecting the availability of seaweed in Hengchun. Harvesting seaweed from slippery reefs is risky and challenging, and the aging workforce adds to the difficulty. As a result, production costs have continually risen, and I-Fung Seaweed Paste even faced a six-month interruption due to a shortage of raw materials.

Mr. Liao, who is in his seventies, has been committed to handcrafting and maintaining high-quality products. At one point, due to a lack of successors, he considered shutting down the business. Fortunately, his second daughter, Liao Wenli, and her husband, Wang Zhengyan, who worked in the tech industry, were willing to return to their hometown to take over the business. Their decision to give up high-paying jobs to run a small, labor-intensive business like seaweed sauce was indeed intriguing to many.

Liao Wenli's answer, "Returning home is to prevent the disappearance of this wonderful taste of the sea," may seem simple, but it's clearly intertwined with numerous struggles and contemplations. She and her husband went through a lot of internal debate. They wanted to escape the hustle and bustle of city life, high-paying but computer-programming jobs, and instead, enjoy the simplicity and fresh air of Hengchun. The gentle pace of life here suited their personalities. Once they decided to settle in Hengchun, they embarked on the journey, wholeheartedly learning the traditional art of seaweed sauce making from her father, who adhered to handcrafting. Gradually, they fell in love with this small seafood business.

While maintaining the traditional I-Fung seaweed packaging, the couple has also developed creative packaging and content for new flavors. One such flavor is "Seaweed Dance SO," implying that the seaweed is delightfully crispy. These various products incorporate different ingredients like white sesame, coix seeds, red rice, brown rice, purple rice, and more, making them both aromatic and crunchy. They are so addictive, with one piece leading to another, making them a must-have for binge-watching sessions. The flavors include spicy, sesame, and five-grain, among others. The packaging features images that represent Hengchun Peninsula's cultural elements, such as the moon lute, Formosan sika deer, ocean waves, and the Eluanbi Lighthouse, letting you taste the essence of Hengchun with every bite.

The product series 海苔舞So The product series 海苔舞So

After the younger generation took over the business, they decided to revive the original name, "畑煮," which means slowly simmering in soy sauce to bring out the best flavors. This name reflects the meticulous process of slow-cooking each strand of seaweed with devotion, resulting in extraordinary flavors. The subsidiary brand, "惦畑," represents their commitment to preserving the techniques of "畑煮." Since seaweed is a precious ingredient, "惦畑" also phonetically resembles the Taiwanese phrase "沈默靜靜," reflecting Mr. Wang's calm and silent nature. As the old shop embarks on a new journey, consumers can undoubtedly savor the authentic local seaweed aroma.

You can enjoy the clear skies and gentle breeze at Chang'an Noodle Factory.

You can enjoy the clear skies and gentle breeze at Chang'an Noodle Factory. You can enjoy the clear skies and gentle breeze at Chang'an Noodle Factory.

It's often said that water is the source of life, and in Pingtung, the "Chang'an Noodle Factory" is renowned far and wide. The deliciousness of their noodles is attributed not only to the dedication of the owners but also to the exceptional quality of their water, which is said to make any dish taste fantastic.

Just how delicious are the sun-dried noodles at Chang'an Noodle Factory? You'll know when you visit the newly opened Chang'an Noodle Shop on Rende Road, Pingtung City. In 2023, Chang'an Noodle Factory's sun-dried noodles made a remarkable appearance at the 2023 Autumn Tokyo International Gift Show, impressing Japan, known for its love of noodles, with the exquisite flavors from Pingtung.

The third-generation leader of Chang'an Noodle Factory. The third-generation leader of Chang'an Noodle Factory.

Wu Guan-rui, the third-generation leader of Chang'an Noodle Factory, was originally a well-paid tech worker in Hsinchu Science Park. However, in 2014, a single phone call changed his destiny. His mother fell ill, and he decided to leave his job, which he had never considered as a path, to return home and care for his mother. Chang'an Noodle Factory, established by his grandfather in 1953, was facing the fate of having no one to take over. Initially, when he returned to his hometown, he intended to put an end to the family business. But during his time dealing with noodles, he realized the hardships of the noodle-making industry. He also accidentally discovered the natural goodness of sun-dried noodles. Consequently, after discussions with his wife, they both took on the legacy of Chang'an Noodle Factory, reviving the old brand with their innovative spirit and applying technology into the noodle-making industry.

The perfect combination of sunlight and water creates the best-tasting noodles. The perfect combination of sunlight and water creates the best-tasting noodles.

The secret to delicious noodles lies in using quality ingredients. Chang'an Noodle Factory prepares its dough from high-gluten flour with simple and pure ingredients, showcasing the most genuine and pure noodle flavor. Hand-rolling the noodles repeatedly helps develop the gluten's resilience. The ample sunshine in Pingtung plays a crucial role, allowing the noodles to absorb plenty of solar energy. As moisture slowly evaporates with the gentle breeze, each noodle absorbs the full power of sunlight. While intense sunlight might lead to the bending and breaking of noodles, afternoon showers help regulate the noodles' moisture, preventing excessive bending. "We are truly grateful for the gift of natural sunlight, sea breeze, and rainwater, which provide Chang'an Noodle Factory with its exceptional natural texture," says Wu Guanwei. People often underestimate the power of the sun, but sunlight alters the starch structure, making the noodles delicious and easily digestible, which is one of the reasons why sun-dried noodles are exceptionally tasty.

The precision in cutting the noodles seems like a dance, displaying the focused strength and beauty in harmony with the noodles. The precision in cutting the noodles seems like a dance, displaying the focused strength and beauty in harmony with the noodles.

Taking the noodle elevator to reach the factory where the noodles are dried and cut, Wu Guan Hui and his wife demonstrated how challenging it is to cut the noodles with such precision. Waiting for the noodles to dry typically takes around 16-21 hours. Therefore, they need to hang the noodles at night, usually between 7 pm and 11 pm. As the weather gets hotter the next day, the noodles will naturally dry. This extensive drying process makes noodle production quite labor-intensive.

Chang'an Noodle Factory has partnered with the Zhongdu Agricultural Production Cooperative to use Taiwan-grown wheat flour to create Chang'an noodles with a distinct wheat aroma. The use of domestically produced wheat is believed to enhance the flavor of the noodles, even though it comes at a relatively higher cost. Chang'an Noodle Factory, known for its excellent reputation, has gained popularity, with word spreading from one person to another. They have also received the "Top 10 Souvenirs of Pingtung" award, and even renowned hotels have started to use Chang'an sun-dried noodles.

The traditional sun-drying process, originally passed down through word of mouth from experienced masters, has been modernized by the third-generation leader with the implementation of scientific recording and standardized operating procedures (SOP). This ensures precise control of temperature and humidity, maintaining the quality of the noodles. Weather conditions and weather forecasts play a crucial role in deciding whether noodle production occurs on any given day.

With a bright and determined look, a lean yet strong physique, Wu Guan Gui exudes a profound passion for noodle-making. He passionately speaks of the value of sun-dried noodles. It wasn't until three years ago when a friend from Lin Bai Department Store in Tainan told him, "Rather than saying how good your noodles are, why don't you just cook a bowl for us to taste?" This statement struck him like lightning and served as a wake-up call for Wu Guan Gui.

Chang'an Noodle Factory is fortunate to have secured a small space on the first floor in the Craftsmen Residential District, which is currently under renovation by the Pingtung County Government. They have transformed this space into a physical storefront for Chang'an Noodle Factory. The restaurant is staffed by young employees and features an exterior adorned with hanging sun-dried noodles decorations. They offer a variety of noodle dishes, including the owner's favorite scallion oil noodles, the popular spicy sesame noodles, local fish ball soup, and you can pair these with a refreshing glass of iced black tea from a tea shop that has been in business for a hundred years. It's a truly delicious experience.

The days of noodle-making are undoubtedly challenging. Although he might express regrets about taking over the business, when it comes to noodles, Wu Guan-rui's eyes light up. He says, "The noodle shop makes Chang'an Noodle Factory more convincing and also creates job opportunities." They've successfully combined the enthusiasm of young people with the local Pingtung industry, aiming to breathe new life into a traditional business and promote Pingtung's industrial culture.

The COVID-19 pandemic made them realize that "crisis can be an opportunity." Their new development of seasoning sauce packets, coupled with the rise in online businesses, unexpectedly opened up another customer base. In the past, there was minimal delivery for noodles, but due to the pandemic, online sales started to increase. In 2013, during a food expo, some customers placed orders for hundreds of packs of noodles, which was a significant boost for their business.

When traveling to Xiao Liuqiu, besides the sesame brittle, there's something else that you can't resist eating again - Mizi Sweet Potato Candy. Although it started unintentionally, it has now grown into a must-buy souvenir for Xiao Liuqiu travelers, offering a sweet and not cloying taste.

Sweet potato candy, traditionally known as "sweet potato cakes" by the local population of Little Liuqiu, was a common post-meal snack found in almost every household in the earlier years. In those days, when tourism had yet to develop, the main agricultural product on Little Liuqiu was sweet potatoes. Since families grew an abundance of sweet potatoes, they used any excess ones to make sweet potato candy by adding sugar and malt syrup. This traditional snack was a beloved choice among the elderly of Little Liuqiu. Residents would often shape the sweet potato candy into round or fish shapes for offerings to deities. The local people referred to it as "sweet potato candy," while the general public commonly knows it as "sweet potato cakes."

"Mizi Sweet Potato Candy" has become a traditional sweet potato candy brand with historical roots in Little Liuqiu, and it was purely unintentional on the part of the returning young man, Mr. Li Chia-chi. Originally, due to his health problems, Mr. Li Chia-chi was discharged from the military more than ten years ago. It was during this time that he suddenly craved his grandma's homemade sweet potato candy, one of the most cherished childhood flavors.

"Mizi" is the name of his grandmother. When his grandfather, who made a living from fishing, fell ill, his grandmother began selling the highly praised homemade sweet potato candy to support the family and make ends meet. The candy became popular among both adults and children because of its authentic flavor, high-quality ingredients, and the delightful crispy texture achieved through handmade craftsmanship.

The process of making sweet potato candy in Little Liuqiu is quite intricate. It involves washing, selecting, peeling, and slicing the sweet potatoes thinly, followed by deep frying. Additionally, it requires preparing sugar syrup, cutting, and packaging. When eaten, the candy comes in small, sticky pieces. After tasting it, Li Jiaqi took the initiative to study how to make it delicious without being too sticky. He decided to re-fry the sweet potato candy to remove excess oil, finding it had a better taste. He then shared it with friends and received high praise. At that time, when he returned to Little Liuqiu, there were limited job opportunities, and tourism was just starting. He took the advice of friends and decided to further research and promote his grandmother's sweet potato candy as his main business.

In 2009, Mizi Sweet Potato Candy started as a small-scale operation. During the first three years, they sold their candies using a small three-wheeled vehicle. The delicious, non-sticky Mizi Sweet Potato Candy from Little Liuqiu gradually gained recognition with the increasing number of tourists. Over a decade ago, tourism on Little Liuqiu began to take off rapidly. The Tourism Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (the predecessor of the Tourism Administration) guided tourism on Little Liuqiu and promoted it internationally. Mizi Sweet Potato Candy became highly popular among tourists from Hong Kong and Macau. In 2012, Mizi Sweet Potato Candy officially opened its first physical store at the pier. The brand is dedicated to preserving the traditional taste of sweet potato candy passed down from the owner's grandmother, and it was named "Mizi Sweet Potato Candy" in her honor. Additionally, they retained historical artifacts from the early days of their business, including the first three-wheeled vehicle, making the shop a nostalgic souvenir store with distinctive cultural significance on Little Liuqiu.

The flavors have also become more diverse, including original, black sesame, cranberry, pumpkin, brown sugar, cashew, and assorted flavors. They also offer golden sweet potato chips, traditional peanut candy, and more to meet the demands of young tourists. Their products are popular online and have been selected as one of the top 100 souvenirs in Pingtung.

Mizi Sweet Potato Candy, known for its crispy and non-sticky texture, has remained true to traditional methods, without adding preservatives or artificial flavors. It's now one of the top three souvenirs in Xiao Liuqiu. Li Jiaqi also set up a specialty restaurant in the second store nearby. The owner, who loves cooking, has developed various unique dishes with excellent flavors. The space is comfortable, making it a great place to escape the heat and satisfy your cravings on hot Xiao Liuqiu.

Jiadong Township Farmers' Association - Rosy Bell has created a wax apple-themed story museum.

Pingtung County is the hometown of wax apples, and Jiadong Township is a major production area for wax apples in Pingtung County. In order to promote the recognition of wax apples from Jiadong, the Jiadong Township Farmers' Association has established a wax apple-themed story gallery and the "Rosy Bell Adventure Park." Travelers passing through Jiadong Township should definitely explore these attractions.

How did a rural farmers' association become a popular attraction for tour buses? The key lies in Ms. Lin Shu-Ling, the Secretary-General of the Jiadong Township Farmers' Association. She has been actively marketing Jiadong's wax apples since her grassroots days at the Farmers' Association. In 2022, she was elected as the Secretary-General. With her passionate dedication to the job, Lin Shu-Ling immediately started promoting the wax apple industry and local businesses. She mentioned, "Jiadong is the primary production area for wax apples, and it's not fair that we have to sell them under other brands."

Due to her previous experience as the promotional manager at the farmers' association, where she had close interactions with farmers, Lin Shu-Ling understood the exceptional quality of Jiadong's wax apples. Jiadong's wax apples had won first place several times in national competitions. Inside the wax apple exploration center, there are informative displays detailing the history and growth process of wax apples. It's emphasized that the best time to consume wax apples is when they turn red. Consequently, Jiadong Township Farmers' Association adopted the "Rosy Bell" brand and ventured into both domestic and international markets.

Due to climate change, the cultivation area of Jiadong's wax apples has decreased from 580 hectares to the current 400 hectares. To maintain the quality of wax apples and ensure the income of farmers, the Farmers' Association has established a wax apple packaging facility. Initially, the staff grade the apples, and everyone works together to sort, package, and box them, selecting only the highest quality wax apples for Rosy Bell to enter the international market. Apples with lower quality or blemishes are used for wax apple processing.

Ms. Lin Shu-Ling mentioned that wax apples are the lifeblood of Jiadong's economy, and the key to keeping farmers in the market is to ensure they can make a profit. With careful selection and packaging, Rosy Bell wax apples can command prices ten times that of regular wax apples, selling for up to 300 NT dollars per kilogram. These products have already entered international markets such as Singapore, Hong Kong, and Vietnam. Jiadong Township Farmers' Association follows a high-quality strategy, ensuring the quality of wax apples in processed gift products while creating profits for the local farmers. This has elevated Jiadong's wax apples, making them not only a source of pride for Taiwan but also for Jiadong, Pingtung.

The Rosy Bell Dream Factory was established in 2021 and serves as an educational facility. It provides insights into the lifecycle of wax apples, from budding to flowering and fruit-bearing, and showcases the transformation into the Rosy Bell brand. The entrance features a captivating giant wax apple, emphasizing its association with Pingtung's specialty, wax apples. This story museum, centered around the wax apple, is particularly attractive because it offers free admission, and it's filled with child-friendly and colorful displays. Many passersby and tour buses stop by to visit. During the wax apple season, visitors can explore this place to get acquainted with the unique Rosy Bell wax apples of Jiadong Township and even purchase fresh wax apples. The complex includes the administrative building of the Jiadong Township Farmers' Association, an educational center, the Rosy Bell Exploration Hall, the Rosy Bell shop, a kiln, a stage, a magical dream factory, a wax apple packaging facility, and an expansive outdoor green square.

Within the park, you can also explore the Rosy Bell kiln workshop and an outdoor seating area. The kiln workshop offers oven-baked meals, but reservations are required.

Jiadong Township Farmers' Association's Promotion Center sells a variety of specialty agricultural products, including the wax apple collection. They offer items such as star diamond shaved ice, wax apple syrup, jam, wax apple dried fruit, wax apple double ice cream, cream bar, snow ice, and various gift boxes. You can also find onions, red beans, and other agricultural products from different towns in Pingtung. The recommended products for a hot day are the wax apple syrup and wax apple cream bar, which have a refreshing sweet and sour taste.

Sundoor Academy

The "Sundoor Academy," established 25 years ago, is, as the name suggests, a nonprofit organization advocating for the importance of family, filial piety, and ethics. The academy aims to provide a guiding light for the children of Gaoshu Township, helping them grow in a positive and virtuous direction.

The style of the Sundoor Academy is closely related to its president, Chen Wenjing. She has personally experienced challenges like dropping out of school, single parenthood, and domestic violence. Through these difficult experiences, she gained a deep understanding of the importance of "home" in shaping one's character. She expresses gratitude for all the setbacks in her life, which have allowed her to better comprehend the needs of others. In the high tree township, where 20% of the population is elderly, they also require care and attention, similar to children. The academy provides afterschool education for children, accompanies underprivileged children in their reading, and helps care for elderly members of underprivileged families. They have many educational and grassroots efforts to meet these needs.

The farmland of Sundoor Academy The farmland of Sundoor Academy

Sundoor Academy is committed to the lifelong mission of "cultivating the disadvantaged to no longer be disadvantaged." They operate with the philosophy of "accompanying education" and provide free after-school tutoring classes. These classes offer remedial teaching and a diverse education that covers not only academics but also character development, agricultural skills, household tasks, and more. The academy also provides meals and assists in addressing issues like domestic violence and social welfare for the disadvantaged children of Gaoshu Township, Pingtung County. Their goal is to provide a safe and nurturing environment for the holistic development of these children. However, Sundoor Academy faces numerous challenges. They require both manpower and financial resources to achieve their vision. Being located in the remote Gaoshu Township, it's challenging to recruit volunteers, and they also have a shortage of staff.

Despite numerous challenges, Sundoor Academy persists in its belief that education for goodness should never cease. This is particularly crucial in a society where the wealth gap is widening, and children in remote areas are struggling with poverty. The academy's director firmly believes that, even in remote regions, with the right education, care, and love, underprivileged children can rise above their circumstances and change their destinies, thus reshaping their futures.

Purchasing agricultural products is an act of charity, a gift of love

The farmland of Sundoor Academy covers approximately six acres, and the primary source of funding comes from selling organic agricultural products. Gaoxiong Township is the largest fruit-producing area in Pingtung County, where pineapples, mangoes, and dragon fruits are cultivated. Besides selling fresh fruits, they also produce various processed products. The most famous are pineapple-related products, such as pineapple cakes, pineapple tofu, and pineapple bean paste sauce. The Sundoor sundoor cake with the motto 'One brick of Sundoor, a lifetime of fortune,' is a product strongly promoted by Sundoor Academy. When people buy these pineapple delicacies, they are supporting Sundoor Academy's mission to nurture future talents.

Helping Sundoor Academy is easy, as they say, 'Purchasing agricultural products is an act of charity, a gift of love.' The academy's pineapple cakes are larger and heavier than the average ones and offer a delightful taste. These pineapples have already helped many students pursue higher education and secure employment. Some of the first-generation children from Sundoor Academy have graduated from college, found employment, and returned to help the academy. This is a source of great satisfaction for the director.

Sundoor Academy leads children, parents, and community residents in building a non-toxic greenhouse home through the 'Greenhouse Building Project.' This initiative allows underprivileged children and parents to study, grow, and work on their own land, establishing roots and perpetuating a cycle of goodness.

Through promoting community agriculture, industry, and product development, we aim to support the transformation of rural communities into tourist and leisure industries. This involves developing high-quality, safe fruit and vegetable industries to enhance the economic development of Jiadong Township. Chen Wenjing said, 'I teach children to be self-reliant,' and she hopes that Sundoor Academy can become self-sustaining, leading the underprivileged towards a dignified path of self-sufficiency. She also hopes that the public can assist Sundoor Academy in protecting children, helping more children grow happily, bravely pursue their dreams, and aid more underprivileged families in turning their destinies around, all in the pursuit of happiness together.

Wugawan Chocolate Coffee Farm

From not understanding cacao at all to becoming a chocolate expert, it's hard to imagine how Wugawan Chocolate Coffee Farm's owner, Lai Xixian, was completely self-taught. When you see the owner's determination and dedication, you can understand why Wugawan chocolate is so popular.

The person in charge of the Wugawan Chocolate Coffee Farm Lai Xixian The person in charge of the Wugawan Chocolate Coffee Farm Lai Xixian

The owner, originally an immigrant from Changhua who moved to Pingtung with a group of friends in 1998 to cultivate and promote coffee, initially found coffee farming quite laborious. They never imagined that they would later delve into the even more intricate world of cacao cultivation. The turning point came when a friend who frequently traveled to Southeast Asia gifted them over 100 cacao trees and asked if they were interested in growing them. At the time, they had little knowledge of what cacao was. It was later revealed that cacao is the precursor to chocolate. With a background as a farmer's son, who had been working on the farm since the age of seven, Lai Xixian is highly skilled in agricultural techniques.

Through a series of fortuitous events, Lai Xixian delved into the research of cacao cultivation. Along the way, he navigated the learning curve, believing that if one is kind-hearted, they will find a way. His love and care for the land seemed to be reciprocated by the divine, as the path of cacao opened up before him. The cacao plantation is located next to the Wugawan Creek, which originates in the Ma Jia Township of Pingtung and flows through the farm's location. Lai's cacao, coffee, and other crops are all grown in the vicinity of the Wugawan Creek, benefiting from its abundant irrigation and nourishment. This is why the business is named 'Wugawan,' as an expression of gratitude to nature. Over the years, they have steadfastly adhered to environmentally-friendly farming practices, with cacao production costs being five times higher than others due to their dedication to protecting the water source.

In 2003, they began cultivating cocoa. From knowing nothing about it, Lai Xixian and Hsu Jiahui, the couple, continuously read books, observed, researched, and learned. They finally found their own methods, becoming chocolate and cocoa experts in Pingtung. They've taken South Taiwan's unique plant flavors, which contain a distinctive fruit acid aroma and aftertaste, and applied these flavors to produce local coffee and chocolate. In 2014, 'Wugawan Chocolate Coffee Farm' officially opened its doors, providing agricultural and culinary educational experiences along with accommodations.

The cocoa and coffee grown on Wugawan's farm are produced using natural farming methods. They insist on not using pesticides, herbicides, and employ organic fertilizers. They also plant bananas for the Formosan Gem-faced civet, squirrels, and other small animals to feed on. Every plant and tree in the farm is interconnected, forming a small universe, according to Lai Xixian. This friendly approach to the land and respect for life has been rewarded by nature. Each piece of chocolate from Wugawan's farm is produced using the Tree to Bar method, providing the most natural and safe product to everyone. Cocoa trees hold a special place in Central and South America, often referred to as the food of the gods. The tropical monsoon climate of Pingtung, characterized by abundant sunshine, high temperatures, and heavy rainfall, along with betel nut trees providing shade, creates a rainforest-like environment where cocoa can thrive in South Taiwan. It's often called the 'Gift of the Gods.' Maintaining quality and caring for the land is a belief and source of pride for Lai Xixian.

Taiwan Dive Center - Nurturing Ocean Ambassadors and Guardians

OCT, 2023
Taiwan Dive Center Taiwan Dive Center

"Taiwan Dive Center," founded in 1963, initially began as an engineering diving company. In 1980, it transitioned into recreational diving under the leadership of the son of the sea, Chen Chien. Through the "Taiwan Dive Center" brand, they showcased the beauty of Taiwan's oceans to the world.

The person in charge of Taiwan Dive Center Chen Chien The person in charge of Taiwan Dive Center Chen Chien

In his early forties, Chen Chien, with his robust and tanned physique, resembles a sunlit boy. When he starts sharing stories about the ocean, it's like an enchanting sea ballad, with each anecdote touching the heart. In his eyes, the marine world is incredibly beautiful, and he's eager to share it with more people. That's why Taiwan Dive Center has been expanding its presence from Kaohsiung, Hengchun, Green Island, Xiao Liuqiu to Okinawa. Their goal is to have a Taiwan Dive Center wherever there's a sea.

The Taiwan Dive Center Kenting Branch The Taiwan Dive Center Kenting Branch

The founding principle of Taiwan Dive Center is "Bring Ocean Into Your Life." This means using diving to bring the ocean into people's lives. It aims to make more people fall in love with the sea and become sea people, joining us in protecting this vast ocean. Chen Chien emphasizes that Taiwan, being an island nation, has a vital mission to be "close to the sea, know the sea, and love the sea." Whether it's providing professional diving courses, selling marine products, or promoting conservation activities, the goal is to genuinely integrate the ocean into our lives.

Born in Kaohsiung, Chen Chien started his career with "Taiwan Dive Center Enterprise Co., Ltd," a company his father founded that specialized in diving engineering. His early experiences in this field exposed him to oil pollution at the docks and the smell of gasoline. However, a chance encounter with recreational diving introduced him to the astonishing world of the ocean. He realized that diving not only could be a source of income but also allowed him to enjoy the beauty of the ocean, including blue skies and pristine marine environments. In 1980, he decided to transition into recreational diving and formally established the Taiwan Dive Center in Kaohsiung. Due to his frequent visits to Kenting for diving, he decided to settle there in 2008. Chen Chien fell in love with Kenting's marine world and the unhurried pace of life on the Hengchun Peninsula. His love for diving led him to meet and marry his beloved wife. They now have three lovely children, and he proudly considers himself a happy father of three.

The birth of his first child in 2017 brought about a profound change in Chen Chien's perspective. He began pondering how he could ensure that his child and future generations could still witness the same magnificent marine world that had captivated him. This led him to embrace a greater mission beyond financial success: the mission of protecting the oceans.

Swimming with the Fishes in Kenting Swimming with the Fishes in Kenting

In addition to taking tourists diving, he began actively volunteering to teach diving at every primary school in Hengchun. The goal is to ensure that every child on the Hengchun Peninsula can explore the ocean, get to know their hometown's marine environment. What's heartwarming is that his son has been accompanying him in the ocean since childhood, dancing with little fish, parrotfish, and barracuda. He has already become friends with marine life. One day, while leading his son and wife into the sea, his son in the middle suddenly stopped and saluted the ocean. It was a touching scene. His son wanted to pay respect to the ocean's friends before getting in the water. Since then, his son has also refused to eat marine life, and this practice continues to this day.

To help more people get to know the ocean and become "sea people," Taiwan Dive Center actively promotes circumnavigation diving trips around Taiwan. Their aim is to use diving to connect Taiwan with the world. Many foreigners have fallen in love with Taiwan through their experiences with Taiwan Dive Center. A journey that connects Taiwan's seas with its local culture, allowing Taiwan to be seen through the eyes of people from all over the world, plunging into the deep blue. There are even foreign diving celebrities who have settled in Hengchun, becoming the best spokespersons for Taiwan Dive Center.

Through cooperation with many elementary schools in Hengchun, Taiwan Dive Center enables children to receive their graduation certificates through marine diving as part of their graduation ceremony. This unique approach helps boost the confidence of children from rural areas, who may often lack self-assurance. Chen Chih-En hopes that these young graduates can proudly say, "We graduated in the sea!" He believes that these ocean enthusiasts will return to their beautiful hometowns in the future because of their deep connection to the ocean.

Diving to Explore the Beautiful Underwater World Diving to Explore the Beautiful Underwater World

In addition to international promotion, Taiwan Dive Center also hopes that all travelers, through their diving journeys, will open up new perspectives and discover that Taiwan is truly a priceless treasure. They aim to use their expertise to do better for the oceans. The diving industry coexists with the sea, working with divers to keep the seas clean and participate in beach clean-up efforts. They incorporate the revenue from diving into a blue fund for ocean conservation, creating a virtuous cycle of business operations and environmental conservation.
